Behind the songs
Another one to young - A.O.T.Y is where it all started for my songwriting. After a close friend of mine lost his brother to suicide it made me reflect back on the time I lost a step siblings cousin to the same battle. “Another one to young” speaks for its self and is aimed to give the listeners a relatable experience in the fight against mental health and especially young suicide.”They hide out in the dark, their smile just a mask, but make up always washes off”
18 - 18 was my first single released under the SOLE music academy program and was when I was really still finding my image and sound, I was listening to a lot of Mitch James at the time and took a lot of inspiration out of his music. 18 was written about being eighteen years old, in a time where we had no worries in the world and everything was just one big party. I think I learnt a lot from writing 18. 18 also covers the confusing times of being young and trying to figure yourself out as you grow and slowly mature into adulthood. “Wasn’t myself those nights I talked a lot of shit then, trying to be someone I lost my sense of rhythm”
Don’t Speak - D.S was written after my grandfather passed away early 2021. It was a really confusing time for me as my dad never had lot to do with his dad, so I never really had a relationship with my grandad. In the song I dived into the great relationship I have with my dad and how lucky I am that I have that relationship. “I’ve seen how a father and son don’t speak, me and you grow closer everyday and i’m so proud to say I love you”. I also sing about how it’s time to leave that last chapter behind. “Don’t look down, that chapters closed now” I think there’s apart of my dad that wishes they’d had a chance to fully mend things before my grandad passed, but I also know how happy he is that he’s made up for it in the relationship we have together.
Outside Kida Kids - O.K.K was written after the EP was finalised and only snuck on to the EP last minute. I wrote O.K.K about the personal times I had growing up in New Zealand as a very active child. We used to do everything outside from building tree houses, digging in the dirt, playing sports to riding our motorbikes down the road to see our friends.”I remember being younger building tree houses until we were called inside” I see things changing these days and it worries me that a lot of kids don't get the same experience as I did growing up. I want to make sure that my kids get every opportunity that I did, I realise technology is a massive part of life these days but in my opinion there is no reason for a child to be sitting on an I-pad inside when just outside the door there is a whole world of productive, creative and sporting things to be doing and achieving “We used to be outside kinda kids plasters covered our skin, we used to ride down to see our friends on bikes out fathers built”
Four - “My parents split up at a young age, when I was five, so full of life” hell of an opening line if you’re trying to figure out what a songs about. Four was written about the struggles of being young and having separated parents. All you want when you’re that ages is for your parents to be together, you don’t understand anything else. “We would hide under the bed, make up stories to get inside your head, white lies and crocodile tears” However I wanted to write about the entirety of the situation… we grew to love our step parents and grew to realise how happy they made both of our parents. The idea of having four people that love you is always better than two and that’s how the title of the song came about. This song was the song that I played around with the most changing things, trying to get the very best out of the ideas I had in my head. “I feel the love come from four directions, couldn’t ask for more”
Book Full of Answers - B.F.O.A was a song I wrote about my mother. My mother has supported me and my sister with everything and anything we have done growing up and managed to put us both through private school. She lost her father a while back and it was at a time where her marriage had fallen apart as well, its fair to say she had every right to crumble at that point but she didn't. Its hard writing a song for someone that deserves so much more than words, this one took me the longest to write and I ended up writing about 3 full drafts that didn’t feel like they had done enough justice so they got scrapped.”She was raised in a small loving hose”. B.F.O.A pretty much tells mums story from start to where we are now, her father would be extremely proud of her and we all are as well “You’re an angel disguised in my mother name”
Closer Now - C.N was written about mine and my sisters relationship. We had a typical brother sister relationship growing up, we didn’t really get along most of the time, Ella would cry and I’d get in trouble for it “You would knock my castles down, scream and shoot till I freaked out”. In the song I write about how different it is now that we have grown up and matured. We now realise the connection we have and its something that grows stronger every year. “Yeah we’re closer now, grown to figure out, what it means to have the same dam blood, share the same last name” I tried to sum up the whole relationship from start to finish. I tired to relate back to the first verse “Mum and Dad would always say, son you’ll love that girl one day”. By putting at the very end of the song “Mum and dad were right”.
Ep ‘Bloodline’ out Now
My debut EP ‘Bloodline” was written as a tribute to my family, each song has its own story. See below for the stories behind the songs.
